Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change visited Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) under the Chairpersonship of Senator Seeme Ezdi.

Islamabad - (Adnan Hameed): Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change visited Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) under the Chairpersonship of Senator Seeme Ezdi. The Senate Committee was welcomed by DG PMD Sahibzad Khan upon their arrival. The committee made a tour to different sections and received briefing about the overall working of Department. Sahibzad Khan, DG PMD, apprised the committee that Pakistan Metrological Department provide services in three different sections which includes weather forecast, Earthquakes and floods monitoring. Currently, the 300 manual and automative weather stations are working in different parts of the country and the department intends to establish 335 more weather stations in coming years in order to achieve proficiency, he added. The committee observed an anomaly in data provided by Pakistan Metrological Department about the recent floods. The PMD forecast was 40pc higher than usual whereas the actual was 400 pc higher, to which the DG PMD wasn't able to respond properly. The Senate Body expressed serious reservations on the inadequate expertise of PMD officials. Senator Seeme Ezdi commented that Pakistan is amongst the most vulnerable countries in the globally rising climate crisis and Pakistan Metrological Department should acquire expertise as per the international standards in order to cope up with this crisis. The meeting was attended by Senator Keshoo Bai,Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed,Senator Khalida Ateeb,Senator Dr. Muhammad Hamayun Mohmand,DG Pakistan Metrological Department Mahr Sahibzad Khan and other senior officers of Ministry of Climate were also in attendance.
