Pakistani students win Bronze Medal in International Chemistry Olympiad

Karachi - 6 August 2024 (Nasir Abbas) : Pakistani students have won the Bronze Medal in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 21-30, 2024. The HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, had trained the four-member team to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad. The team participated in the Olympiad under the sponsorship of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Mr. Abdul Rafay (Karachi Grammar School) won a Bronze Medal for Pakistan, while other team members included Ms. Mahnoor Rashid, Lahore Grammar School, Wah Cantt, Ms. Marva, Punjab College for Women Jaranwala Road, Faisalabad, and Mr. Syed Mehir Ali Shah, Dubai International Public School and College, Mansehra. Prof. Dr. M. Raza Shah and Prof Dr. Khalid M. Khan, Coordinator to the National Chemistry Talent Contest (NCTC), who headed the Pakistani National Chemistry Olympiad in Riyadh, expressed these views while speaking at a meeting held at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, here on Tuesday. The meeting was presided by Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen, the Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences. Talking about the training of the team, Prof. Raza Shah said that these students were trained at HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry under the STEM Careers Program of HEC. Dr. Khalid M. Khan informed the meeting that Pakistan had obtained full membership in the Chemistry Olympiad in 2005 in Taiwan. Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen congratulated the Pakistani students’ team and their mentors for their remarkable achievement. The Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Khalid Iraqi, and Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, congratulated the team members and their leaders for their success.
