Vietnam’s Ambassador Reflects on Decades of Progress and Calls for Deeper Ties with Pakistan on 79th Independence Day

Islamabad -31 August 2024 (Adnan Hameed) : The Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Islamabad hosted a grand reception to celebrate the 79th National Day of Vietnam. The event marked a significant occasion, commemorating Vietnam’s historic journey to independence and its subsequent progress under the visionary leadership of Ho Chi Minh. The Ambassador of Vietnam to Pakistan, warmly welcomed the esteemed guests, including diplomats, government officials, and members of the Pakistani and Vietnamese communities. In his speech, the Ambassador Tuan reflected on Vietnam’s historical journey, beginning with President Ho Chi Minh’s Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945. He emphasized the significance of this day, marking Vietnam’s emergence as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. He noted that Vietnam has since entered a new era of national independence, where the people became the true masters of their country and their destinies. The Ambassador underscored the progress Vietnam has made over the past 79 years, particularly during the last 40 years of the "Renovation Period" (Đổi Mới). He highlighted Vietnam's transformation from a once impoverished nation into a middle-income developing country, boasting a stable socio-political environment, improved living standards, and enhanced international stature. He pointed out that Vietnam now maintains diplomatic relations with 193 countries and enjoys strategic partnerships with 36 nations. In the economic domain, the Ambassador mentioned that Vietnam has established trade and investment ties with 220 countries and territories. He cited the country's impressive economic performance in 2023, with a GDP of $430 billion and a growth rate of 5.8%. Vietnam is now recognized as a leading exporter of pepper, cashew nuts, and rice on the global stage. Turning to the bilateral relationship with Pakistan, the Ambassador lauded the 52-year history of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He noted that the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Pakistan have grown across various sectors, including politics, trade, and economic collaboration. Bilateral trade reached $705 million in 2023, with expectations to hit $900 million by the end of 2024. The Ambassador also called for further collaboration in trade and investment, highlighting key sectors where both countries can benefit, such as cotton, pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, and information technology. In conclusion, the Ambassador expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Pakistan and the international community for their continued support to Vietnam over the past decades. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening the bonds between Vietnam and Pakistan, envisioning a bright future of cooperation and mutual development. The event was further honored by the presence of Former Pakistani Ambassador to Vietnam, Salahuddin Chaudhary, who attended as the Chief Guest. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Chaudhary conveyed heartfelt congratulations to the people and government of Vietnam on behalf of Pakistan. He shared personal anecdotes from his tenure in Vietnam, expressing admiration for the resilience and determination of the Vietnamese people. He also lauded the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, whose vision has been instrumental in shaping modern Vietnam. The ceremony concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting, where the cake was beautifully adorned with the flags of Vietnam and Pakistan. The Ambassador of Vietnam, along with the Chief Guest and ASEAN Heads of Mission, participated in the cake-cutting, symbolizing the strong and enduring ties between Vietnam and Pakistan.
