Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon highlights University's performance in fifth Senate meeting

Lahore(Nasir abbas)Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) will soon be starting preventive cardiology services. This is a new subspecialty that focuses on lowering patients' risks for developing heart disease and having a first heart attack or stroke. The department has been established at the Landhi Campus and MoUs with NICVD will be signed next week to formalize the arrangement. It was announced in the fifth meeting of the Senate of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) that was held on Monday. The meeting was conducted by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Amjad Siraj Memon in the presence of Pro-Chancellor Provincial Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, alongside the pro Vice Chancellor Professor Saadia Akram and Registrar Dr Azam Khan. In the meeting, Provincial Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho pledged to take steps to provide space for hostels and sports activities for students. Earlier, The Senate session began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Registrar Dr. Azam Khan. Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Saadia Akram then presented the agenda of the session. The meeting reviewed the performance and financial estimates of the University and approved the revised budget of the last two years. The audited accounts for the year 2019 and 2020 were also approved. Revised statutes for the appointment criteria for the post of Directors and additional Directors and minutes of the previous meeting were approved. NICH Professor Mashal Khan was nominated as a member of the Finance and Planning Committee of JSMU. Describing the University's two-year performance, Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon said that JSMU is the largest public sector medical university with a high enrollment, 4,266 active registrations in constituent institutions, and more than 5,000 enrollments in the University. He said that JSMU had requested the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council to increase the dental sciences seats from 50 to 75. This request has undergone preliminary inspection and the university hopes to receive permission to increase the dental seats, he said. The Vice-Chancellor also said that the Department of Medical Technology of JSMU has started a 4-year bachelor's program for training in Dialysis, ICU, and Pediatric ICU. Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon said that JSMU has recently established a Preventive Cardiology Department at Landhi Campus. Next week, MoUs will be signed between JSMU and NICVD, after which preventive cardiology services will be started there. In the meeting, the issue of shortage of hostels and space for sports activities for students was also raised by the members of the Senate. On this, the provincial health minister said that she has always encouraged the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the students. She also gave her full assurance to solve the problem soon. At the end, Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon said that Provincial Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has always taken great steps for the development of the university. He hopes that she will make every possible effort to develop JSMU more and more in the future.
