International Conference Explores Pakistan's Strategic Position in a Changing World

Islamabad - 24 April 2024 (Adnan Hameed) : The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East & Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Pakistan Office, successfully hosted a one-day International Conference titled “Pakistan in the Emerging Geopolitical Landscape.” The event, held on April 24, 2024, brought together esteemed diplomats, scholars, and experts to delve into the evolving regional dynamics and Pakistan's strategic role therein. Under the theme of "Navigating Complexity: Challenges and Opportunities," the conference aimed to shed light on three pivotal areas: Afghanistan post-August 2021, the evolving Middle East, and emerging non-traditional security threats in Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Distinguished speakers, including Ambassador Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s Special Representative on Afghanistan, and Dr. Almut Weiland-Karimi, Country Director FES, Pakistan, provided invaluable insights into the geopolitical landscape and emphasized the importance of global cooperation in addressing shared challenges. Ms. Amina Khan, Director CAMEA, underscored the significance of increased global partnerships and equitable progress amidst ongoing global transformations. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General ISSI, highlighted the complexities and multifaceted challenges faced by Pakistan in today's world, stressing the necessity of a collaborative approach rooted in international law and cooperative multilateralism. The Inaugural Session witnessed the participation of a diverse array of attendees, including academics, practitioners, think-tank experts, diplomats, and members of civil society and the media. Their active engagement and insightful contributions further enriched the discourse, setting the stage for constructive dialogue and meaningful collaboration in addressing the geopolitical realities of the 21st century.
