Sufi Opera Singer Saira Peter Engages in High-Level Cultural Dialogue with Minister for Culture Jamal Shah

Islamabad - 15 November 2023 (Adnan Hameed) : Renowned British-Pakistani soprano and Sufi Opera Singer, Saira Peter, held a significant meeting with Interim Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Jamal Shah, at the Division on Wednesday. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss collaborative initiatives within the music industry and to propose a Solo-concert to be hosted at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA). Accompanying Saira Peter were her official Manager, Zafar Francis, and her husband, Stephen Smith, an accomplished Ethnomusicologist and pianist/Harmonium player. The Director General of PNCA, Muhammad Ayub Jamali, also participated in the meeting, highlighting the importance of fostering cultural exchange. The agenda of the meeting encompassed various mutual interest issues related to the music industry, as well as the upcoming solo concert. Minister Jamal Shah, in acknowledgment of Saira Peter's contribution to the cultural landscape, presented her with a commemorative shield. Saira Peter, currently collaborating with a team of British artists, is actively involved in the development of the world's first full-scale "Sufi Opera." This musical stage drama, based on the story of Umar Marvi—one of Latif's "seven heroines" of Sindh—is set to be staged in London upon completion. Saira Peter is poised to take on the pivotal role of "Marvi" in this groundbreaking production. The meeting signifies a pivotal moment in the collaboration between the artist and the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting cultural diversity and artistic innovation.
