Parliament of Pakistan: the first which owns SDGs Says NA Deputy Speaker

New York - (Nasir abbas) : Deputy Speaker National Assembly Zahid Akram Durrani has said that Parliaments nreflect the aspirations of their peoples as these undertake vital legislative, oversight, and policy review functions for the state. He also said that he 2030 Agenda has recognized this essential role of Parliaments. He expressed these views while addressing the Parliamentary Forum at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on the theme "The mid-point toward the SDGs: taking stock of parliamentary action United Nations" in New York today. Deputy Speaker National Assembly Zahid Akram Durrani has said that Parliamentary ownership of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals is pivotal for achieving these goals. He also highlighted that Pakistan is the first country to adopt the SDGs as its own national development agenda through a resolution adopted in National Assembly in 2016. While talking about establishment of Parliamentary Task Force to strategize, legislate, and oversee the effort to implement the SDGs, he also mentioned that The national and provincial and special area task forces are closely monitoring progress towards the SDGs in Pakistan. He also mentioned that a total of 20 sub-groups of parliamentary task forces on SDGs have been formed at the National parliament. While highlighting the considerable progress in this area made by Pakistan by integrating sustainable development into national policies and aligning o legislative agenda with the SDGs, he expressed resolve and commitment to realize the SDGs. He also said that Pakistan would continue to work relentlessly to strengthen parliamentary institutions and to learn from others and cooperate on innovative solutions.
