Malaysia and Pakistan to Forge Stronger Ties, Promoting Unity & Progress: Speech by Malaysian PM at NUST
Islamabad - 4 October 2024 (Adnan Hameed) : The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, delivered a thought-provoking address at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his leadership and reaffirmed the deep bonds of friendship between Malaysia and Pakistan.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the significance of education and innovation, applauding NUST for its role in advancing Pakistan's academic standards. He reminded students of the intellectual legacy of Pakistan, referencing historical figures such as Al-Biruni, Dr Abdus Salam, and Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, who have made global contributions in various fields, says press note.
The Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized the shared philosophical values between Malaysia’s MADANI framework and the ideals of Allama Iqbal, particularly in promoting social justice, human dignity, and intellectual renewal. He also spoke of Iqbal’s ideas on selfhood, renewal, and the Muslim world’s need for unity and intellectual growth, drawing parallels with Malaysia’s approach to modernity.
Addressing bilateral relations, Anwar Ibrahim pointed to the growing economic ties between Malaysia and Pakistan, with trade reaching nearly USD 2 billion annually. He also outlined opportunities for collaboration in the halal industry, Islamic finance, and climate change policies.
The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of combating extremism and terrorism, advocating for a unified approach that includes educational and social reforms. He also called for increased roles for youth and women in shaping the future of both nations.
In his closing remarks, Anwar Ibrahim condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon, calling for an end to Israel’s aggression. Quoting Allama Iqbal, he urged both nations to continue striving for progress and renewal, ensuring that Malaysia and Pakistan remain at the forefront of development and unity in the Global South.
