Urooj Fatima Shines: JSMU's Best Graduate in MBBS 2022-2023

Karachi - 13 January 2024 (Nasir Abbas) : Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) held its fifth convocation at a renowned hotel in Karachi, where degrees were awarded to more than 500 successful graduates. Twenty seven medals were awarded to the best graduates and position holders of batch 2022-2023, out of whom female students secured 25 medals. Urooj Fatima, MBBS student, received three medals for her exceptional performance. After distributing medals to the position holders, Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, the Chancellor and chief guest of the Convocation, congratulated the graduating students and expressed appreciation for the crucial role played by parents and teachers in their achievements. He praised JSMU as a reputable medical university, offering accessible opportunities for youth to obtain quality education at an affordable cost. He added, 'Nursing is an integral part of the healthcare system, playing a vital role in patient care, health promotion, and disease prevention. The emergence of the first batch of nursing graduates underscores JSMU’s dedication to meeting the evolving demands of the healthcare sector.' He urged the graduates to pledge allegiance to their country and appealed them to remain in Pakistan, emphasizing the critical need for their service to address the shortage of doctors and contribute to fulfilling the healthcare needs of the nation. As the Chancellor, he expressed hope that efforts to excel in the field of medicine and the inculcation of moral values in the students at the university campus will continue in the future with great zeal. Secretary Health, Mansoor Abbas Rizvi distributed degrees to the graduates. While addressing the convocation, Vice-Chancellor JSMU, Professor Amjad Saraj Memon, congratulated the parents for their unwavering sacrifices and support. He added that the year 2023 has been a period of growth and collaborations for JSMU. This was achieved by introducing new programs, signing MoUs with national and international organizations, and opening new campuses. He highlighted various ongoing projects at JSMU, including the establishment of SESSI's affiliated hospital for the School of Nursing and Midwifery, establishment of Pakistan's first Preventive Cardiology Clinic, operating at no cost for the underserved residents of Landhi, JSMU offered a flood relief initiative in locations such as Dadu, Matiari, Hub, and even further beyond. Furthermore, JSMU provides free dental treatments and laboratory services at Karachi Press Club, he added. Professor Huma Ali, the chairperson of the convocation committee also addressed the event. Registrar Dr Azam Khan performed the oath-taking ceremony. The best graduate for MBBS 2022-2023 was Urooj Fatima. Sadia Khalil was the best graduate of BDS year 2022-2023. Huda Zamir received the best graduate title in the Pharm D discipline for the years of 2022-2023. Other notable best graduates include Maham Bano (BSN), Mida Azhar (MSPH), Shahzada Khushbakht Waseem (BBA) and Aimon Mukhtar. Urooj Fatima (MBBS), Aimen Azher (BDS), Nimra Rasool (BDS Basic Science), Maham Bano (BSN), Maheen Iqbal (BBA HCM), Shahzadi Khushbakht Waseem (BBA Hons), and Arfeen (Pharm D) were awarded gold medals for securing first positions. Bronze and silver medals were also awarded for securing the second and third positions in MBBS, BDS, and Pharm D. Certificates were distributed to the students who secured the 4th to 10th positions in MBBS, BDS, BSN, and Pharm D. In addition to bachelor's programs, degrees were also conferred upon graduates of master's programs, including MBA, MSPH, and MPH, at the convocation ceremony. Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Saadia Akram delivered vote of thanks to the guests. During the program, documentaries and slide shows showcasing graduating students were also screened.
